My daughter and son-in-law have a place on the Shenandoah River in Virginia with 70 acres of forest. I'm trying to talk him onto going halves with me on a mill. He's tempted, but not there yet. I'll keep your set-up in mind if in case I succeed.

John's setup is anything but boring. thanks, John.

Hank, For your kids with the 70acres, you might want to take a look at Glenn Lucas' setup for drying bowl blanks. He uses an old containerized cargo container. You might be able to find someone in the kids' area looking to dispose of a container. I think that Glenn's might be just sitting on the ground. I visited a guy in Suffolk who gave me a ShopSmith ER-10 that he had stored in a container. His farm was low enough that he had the container raised out of the dirt on timbers (to slow down the floor getting wet and rusting out).

I think that several of John's features would adapt readily to a container.

John,
Your ingenuity always amazes me, the jigs , setups , tools creations etc. This log handling , milling is another one. Thanks for your active participation in this site.

That is a nice score and a great setup you have from log to lumber!

I love walnut.  That is my favorite wood by far.

Thanks for all the photos showing your equipment (and energy).
Of all your projects I’ve read about here, I don’t recall anything large made of walnut. Do you sell the dry boards, or why do you need so much?

I've snuck a few past you over the years, Peter.

You're correct, though, I can't use all the wood I mill, so I do sell some.  Walnut is the premier local wood, so the price I get for that helps offset the low prices for most other species.  I've given a bunch of walnut to friends, too, especially one who has helped me mill a lot of logs.

Is there a link to a shared public album or just the individual pics?

RE: Walnut Score - Arlin Eastman - 05-19-2025

In Aug we sold 42 walnut trees from 36" to 19" and it was nice to get the money.  All the scrap off cuts  3" to 20"I will turn or give to other turners
