RE: Can anybody recommend a good straight edge - museumguy - 04-26-2025 I've always made my own. The first ones were made in 1988. One is 104" long , the other is 54" long. Before I left the museum shop to work in a cabinet shop in Leonardtown, I made both out of 1/2" plywood, about 6" wide. I edged them both with laminate. They have been accurate and very handy for the last 37 years. When I've made new ones for whatever current employer I was working for, I started with a piece of 1/2" ply, about 8" wide. A trick that I learned was to rip about 1/16" off one edge, preferably in one smooth continuous cut on the tablesaw. Then, spin it, repeat, keeping the fresh cut edge against the fence. The more you do this, the straighter the edge becomes. I've made many like this over the years, sometimes on a jobsite and none have let me down. Just another method. RE: Can anybody recommend a good straight edge - toolmiser - 04-27-2025 I hear that metal studs are pretty straight, and they come in different gauges of metal. Of course this is all based on (how straight is straight). Definitely a low cost option. Something to keep in mind...the 1 1/2" depth of the metal stud will limit, somewhat, the depth of cut of the saw. |
