Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - meackerman - 07-22-2015 mine leaked out of its can, while it was in a cardboard box, all over the dining room floor. Was in the process of building my new shop and had stuff stashed all over to keep it out of the weather. Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - bhh - 07-22-2015 BTDT, too. Can I join the club? Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - meackerman - 07-22-2015 bhh said: sure. costs $6 to join. ![]() Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - MichaelMouse - 07-22-2015 bhh said: Alcohol loves water, which promotes corrosion. Don't put shellac in metal containers. Unless you REALLY want to join the club. Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - Admiral - 07-22-2015 LIL One more reason to buy your own shellac flakes and mix as you need it. Nice and fresh, a joy to use. The flakes themselves will last a long, long time if you keep them in the fridge. I have some over 15 years old, mix up just fine. I gave up on Zinszer a long time ago. Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - Cian - 07-22-2015 Where do you guys typically source your flakes? Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - skizzo - 07-22-2015 Admiral said: That's what I've almost always done, just mix it up when needed. I was out a couple years ago and needed a small bit so bought this can of Zinsser, which has been sitting ever since while I've gone back to flakes. Cian, IIRC, I just got them at Woodcraft or Rocker. Countless places on-line, including Amazon. Re: PSA - Old can of shellac - ruffcutt - 07-22-2015 Happened to me too, more that once! OK, in case anybody is interested: This kind of can (known as three-piece) is made from pre-coated sheet metal. The side seam is soldered or welded and then a stripe of coating is applied to the seam to repair the heat damage to the coating. This is not meant to seal the can but to isolate the can contents from the metal. However problems happen and when they do they affect entire batches. 1 million cans is considered a small order in this business. The other point of failure is in the bottom seam. The can end has a sealer around the rim which is compressed when the can is seamed. If the maker used a sealer which is attacked by alcohol then the can would leak from here. Visual inspection of the can should tell you if this is so. Now you know why the drinks industry has switched to 2-piece cans. There is only one point of failure and that is the top seam, which is totally under our control (it's our machine seaming this). |
