Looks to me like red oak but seeing the end grain would help.

I'm looking to change the dust port on my jet cabinet saw from the left side to the right side. I managed to remove the metal sheet that sloped to the left side. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and how you dealt with metal pan. Thanks. Anthony.

Best shoulder plane on a limited budget?

Your cheapest option would be an old wooden rabbet plane. You should be able to find a good one for $20 or less.

Festool track saw - cord or battery?
Posted by: Latech15 - 01-02-2016, 09:24 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (8)

I had the dewalt cordless for a while when they had the clearance prices on them. I just have the 2 festool corded models now. The battery version won't allow you to turn the vac automatically when trigger is pressed and if you want to use it on thicker solid wood you may find the power lacking. Personally I didn't find the lack of a power cord a big benefit because I still had the vac hose attached. Using it with only the dust bag would be different but I never did that.

Use the old paper as a pattern. I just buy my paper already cut.

  Can it be done?
Posted by: Herb G - 01-02-2016, 07:36 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (7)

I don't see why it would be a big problem. You might have to drill new mounting holes and change the drive pulley if the shaft size changes.

I'm using a Sears contractor saw from the 80s which has been highly modified with a Vega Pro fence, built into a cabinet, and reinforced in a couple of places. One thing I haven't found to be a problem is the 1.5 (claimed) hp motor. Not using full kerf blades helps but mine will spin full kerfs in anything I've ever run through it.

What makes you want to upgrade?

  Post Drill
Posted by: cwarner - 01-01-2016, 10:01 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (6)

Found this post drill for sale and made the call, I'm first in line for it. Can anyone ID it? The owner told me that the part of the advancing mechanicanism that engages the top gear broke off before he bought it and always intended to fix it but never got around to it. He says that you can manually spin the wheel and advance . Can anyone ID this thing so I can find accurate picture of the missing mechanism? Also looks to be missing the table.

  Finish for treenware
Posted by: Guest - 01-01-2016, 09:58 PM - Forum: Finishing - Replies (1)

The use of a neutral finish which can be ingested is a good idea. Any non drying oil plus a edible wax is safe finish. Food safe just means that it is OK in contact with food not that it's edible. For instance food grade shellac is edible. Maple can be an allergen so be aware. You want an edible finish so an edible oil plus wax or food grade shellac is your choice for a spoon that will be used to eat with.

The wire coming off the brushes looked pretty fried, especially the back one.

That would be your que to replace them.
